His outstanding work led to his promotion to as head of software systems. At this post, he helped GTE Laboratories come up with United State’s first network management platform. The platform, popularly called TONICS, enabled the firm to integrate its network infrastructure, transition, and switching of its telephone network. This helped improve the efficiency of the firm’s networks.
He was later moved to GTE’s headquarter in Dallas to enable him manage the firm’s system development. At the headquarters, Shaygan was in charge of developments involving wireless, internetworking, wire line, and information according to Forbes.
In 2000, when GTE and Bell Atlantic came together to form Verizon, Shaygan was appointed as the first president of the new company’s eBusiness division. Within a short period, he was promoted to the position of chief information officer, a position he had held previously at GTE Laboratories. At the position, he was responsible for the improvements of communication services offered by Verizon and the development of new products that could help the company achieve a greater market penetration. During his tenure, he supervised the development and the launch of FiOS, a fiber optic connectivity. The new product helped the company achieve a 35% market penetration rate. The product managed to increase the bottom line of the firm.
After 11 years at Verizon, Shaygan moved to London to work for Barclay’s global retail functions. He joined the multinational firm as the chief operating officer of the retail operations. He later rose to the chief operations and technology officer making him responsible for the firm’s retail, cards, business, and investment banking.
