George Soros’ Act of Generosity is Historic & Inspiring

George Soros has never been the kind of man who has shied away from controversy, or media attention, especially when it comes to doing what he feels is right and beneficial to the world. He has spent the better part of his entire life trying to help those around him to live better lives and to make the world a more hospitable and fair place for us all. Despite what those who oppose him politically socially say, he is a man with strong convictions and who is constantly trying to find new and meaningful ways to make a difference. With that in mind it is no surprise that he has recently undertaken a massive act of generosity, not even when the amount of that generality is taken into account. Recently it was announced that George Soros has transferred almost all of his massive personal fortune to his philanthropic organization The Open Society Foundations.

The gift in the amount of more than $18B is the largest single transfer of wealth from an individual to a charitable organization in history. According a report appearing in The New York Times, it not only sets a record for charitable contributions to a single organization by a single individual, but it also places Open Societies as now the second largest non-profit foundation in The Unites States a close second to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. According to Forbes, the gift now knocks Mr. Soros down a few notches on their list of the world’s richest people with a new net worth of approximately $8B which would place him as the 59th richest person in America, a drop of more than 39 spots on the famous list. According to The New York Times report, the donation took place in phases over a period of a few years, but the activity was not announced until just recently and it appears this is not the end. Another approximately $2B is slated for transfer to the organization from Soros’ personal fortune in the next year and more information click here.

So where will the money be put to use? The simple answer to that is everywhere and for just about everything. Open Societies was founded more than 30 years ago and grew out of a concept inspired by Soros’ admiration of Karl Popper and his Open Society’s philosophy which he developed during WWII. The words that Popper wrote resonated very strongly with Soros, who grew up in the war, a Jew in Budapest during the Nazi occupation. During that time Soros saw atrocities and oppression like nothing he could have ever thought possible, and those things haunted him even after he moved to the states and became a successful financier. With his fortune and success he vowed to do whatever he could to make sure that such injustices never happened again. He founded the Open Society Foundations to help ensure the non-violent spread of democracy and social justice reform in more than 120 developed and developing countries around the world.

The donation that he made to the foundation will help to see to it that the mission of Open Societies is able to continue for many more years. With this wonderful act of love, kindness, and generosity that George Soros has done, he has helped to ensure that peace, justice, and freedom will continue to grow around the world, and that all people will have the ability to be the best that they can and Follow him Twitter.com.
