In a study published in the journal, Molecular and Cellular Oncology, researchers have discovered that a certain olive oil compound eradicates a cross section of human cancer cells, without inflicting any devastation on cells that are normal and active. Oleocanthal, is a compound which penetrates the infected cell and intersperses enzymes that facilitates the termination of the cell.
The World Cancer Report, published by the United Nation’s World Health Organization in 2014, indicated that worldwide, 14 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in addition to approximately eight million deaths.
Prior research revealed that oleocanthal was effective in terminating certain cancerous cells, but could not determine the mechanisms that fostered its effectiveness. Lead research of this study, Paul Breslin, of Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, believe that the success of oleocanthal can be attributed to the fact that it focuses on a specific protein contained within the cancer cell, which activates a programed cell termination.
In laboratory trials, oleocanthal was administered to the cancerous cells and observed cell deaths occurring at a rate of 30 to 60 minutes. As Marcio Alaor BMG is aware, programmed cell termination usually occurs in a period of 16 to 24 hours. Breslin speculated on the possibility of other factors contributing to cancerous cells death.
Breslin and his research team suggest that further evaluation is necessary beyond the laboratory to demonstrate the potential of oleocantal in eradicating cancer cells and tumors in animals.
