They had a massive meat factory in West Chicago that used cryogenic food processing methods that preserved foods with liquid nitrogen. Today, the OSI Group remains as a well-trusted source for supplying beef products to McDonald’s.

Sheldon Lavin’s Ascension in the World of Food Services

Sheldon Lavin is currently the Chairman and CEO of OSI Group, but his road to the top was not overnight, and actually occurred over the span of several decades. Today, Mr. Lavin is a world-renowned businessman who is revered by his peers and respected by an entire generation of future entrepreneurs. Contrary to his clear domination of the meat processing and food services industry, Mr. Lavin was an outsider prior to 1970, seeing his first real successes as the head of a financial consultancy firm, as well as an investor and executive in the banking industry. It was Mr. Lavin’s success in the banking and financial consultancy industry that led to his dealings with Otto and Sons, which would later become OSI Group, LLC. In 1970, in an effort to secure funding for Otto and Sons, Mr. Lavin was contacted to help bring the deal together. Mr. Lavin’s efforts proved to be a massive success, as Otto and Sons were able to find the necessary funding, which led to the building of a new meat processing facility. With the creation of the new meat processing facility, Otto and Sons were able to secure a deal that made them the midwest meat suppliers for McDonald’s Corporation. Due to Mr. Lavin’s incredible success, he was asked to join Otto and Son’s on a full-time basis, but he declined, instead deciding to stay involved as a consultant. Although Mr. Lavin declined the initial offer, he was able to see the potential regarding Otto and Sons and negotiated a caveat that would allow him to join the team on a more permanent basis at a later date if he chose to. While working as a consultant, Mr. Lavin steadily became more involved with the operations at Otto and Sons, and by the 1980’s, after which the company had been rebranded OSI Group, he had become a leading executive within the company, constructing a major expansion that saw them reach new territory.

Today OSI Group is operating in 60 countries across the globe and employs over 20,000 people. Due to Mr. Lavin’s family-oriented approach, many of his employees have been with the company for a decade or more, with the company continuing to grow globally at a rapid pace. As Mr. Lavin continues to trailblaze in the food service industry, the awards continue to stack up, and he was recently recognized by India’s Vision World Academy.
