Sunlight Continues to Damage Skin Even After Exposure Stops

The sun’s UVA and UVB rays damage skin, leading to premature wrinkles, dark spots and potential skin cancer. That’s why we limit our sun exposure time and slather on the sunscreen during outdoor excursions. But the damage to the skin continues even after we get out of direct sunlight.
Scientists at Yale University have discovered that the damaging rays of the sun which enter the pigment (coloring) of our skin is doing DNA damage long after we’re in the shade. Laboratory tests reveal that the sun’s damage is still going on inside skin cells up to four hours after the sun exposure has ended.
Lead researcher, Prof Douglas Brash, explains the phenomenon that is going on inside the skin cells to be much like what occurs within a firefly to give it the power needed to light up. Haidar Barbouti has read that the energy from the sun which the firefly uses to light up is working inside our skin cell doing damage to our DNA structure.
The knowledge of this continued damage to the skin is going to be used to develop new sunscreen varieties that will do a better job of protecting the skin both during sun exposure time and afterwards as well.

Nanotubes Can Help to Detect and Destroy Cancer Cells

Cancer cells are among the more difficult disease tissues to destroy, once these cells have begun to grow. Surgeries and chemotherapy have long been the more advanced methods of finding and delivering an effective and long term treatment for this disease. Today there are laser devices that are being used to detect and destroy cancer cells before they begin to develop. Haidar Barbouti has heard that a modern microscopic gold tube or nanotube is one of the more promising technological advances in the field of medicine and oncology. More on Barbouti can be found on his Linkedin page.

A microscopic gold tube is inserted into an area of a patient, which has indications of abnormal cancer growth. A small tube is able to locate certain body lesions that may be diagnosed as cancerous. A near infrared light frequency generates heat and, also, makes the human skin areas transparent or easy to examine.

A laser nanotube with different strengths is used to reveal tumors. A higher frequency laser tube is effective in killing any tumorous cells that have been located. The nanotube is able to deliver medicine to the area of the patient’s body that needs further treatment and chemotherapy.

This newer form of medical surgery may allow future surgeons to use only injections and laser blasts to eliminate cancerous skin lesions and abnormal areas of cell growth. Scientists at the University of Leeds have successfully completed initial studies indicating useful applications of the nanotube for imaging and cancer removal.

Heart Disease Not Affected by Salt– In New Study

In a study of 2,642 people with an average age of 74, by JAMA Internal Medicine, it has been shown that the consumption of salt may have little or now effect on heart disease risk. The mix of participants included 62% white and 38% African American.

Results of the study showed that those whose intake of sodium was between 1500 milligrams and 2300 milligrams, which amounts to about a teaspoon of salt, had no meaningful heart disease risk. With current guidelines stating that one should consume less than 1500 milligrams per day, this calls for more study.

Dr. Andreas P. Kalogeropoulos, an assistant professor of medicine at Emory University, is the lead author of the study and has stated that the guidelines must be upheld until there is more evidence in a clinical trial of adults over the age of 51.

In the meantime, it has been suggested to Brian Torchin to continue to follow those guidelines of the American Heart Association.

North American Spine Rings In Six Years Of Helping Patients

North American Spine has released a report through PR Newswire, and picked up by Becker’s Spine Review, that states that they have been helping patients with back, neck, and spine problems, for over six years now. The Dallas, Texas-based company is celebrating six years of helping their patients to recover from back and neck pains. Although the company is based primarily in Dallas, Texas, they have other locations in different areas, which receive many different patients, from different demographics. The help that North American Spine has given its patients is invaluable, as shown by country music singer, and also songwriter, Larry Gatlin.

After suffering from leg pains for over 47 years, Larry went to a North American Spine, in order to help ease the pain he’d been feeling for so long. He now claims that he only has some soreness in his leg, which is much better, compared to the large amounts of pain he used to be in. He claims that North American Spine has changed his life for the better, and he’s grateful for what they’ve done for him. There are many success stories such as Larry’s, because North American Spine has treated over 8000 patients to date.

With an over 83% success rate, North American Spine has had great success with their AccuraScope procedures. Many are suffering from back, spine, and neck pain, which plagues them on a daily basis. When the pain becomes chronic, meaning that it lasts for six months or more, it is problematic, and surgery may be required. Although many people suffer from back pain at one point or another in their life, chronic back pain is not normal, and needs the attention of a doctor. Many have sought out North American Spine, in order to permanently relieve the pain they are seeing on a daily basis.

Dr. Darren Schuhmacher, Who also works with North American Spine, has released a statement, stating that the work that North American Spine is doing, is revolutionary. He also states that the procedures performed, can provide lasting relief for those suffering from pain. The AcuraScope procedure only requires a very small incision, in order to insert the scope, in order to see inside the person’s back or neck, and determine what the problem is. The surgery lasts less than 45 minutes, and it’s an outpatient procedure. With such a high success rate, it’s understandable why North American Spine is celebrating six years of helping patients to live pain free.

You Must Have Been a Beneful® Baby!

Standing in the pet aisle at the grocery store, as I made my selection from the variety of Beneful® wet and dry dog foods, I was reminded of my first introduction to Potter, my first grand-puppy. I was looking forward to the coming visit of Potter with his human family and I wanted to make sure to have everyone’s favorite foods on hand.

Potter was only ten weeks old when my son and daughter-in-law adopted the pint-sized brown terrier mix from a rescue shelter in San Francisco. Determined to provide their furry family member with only the best, they started him on Beneful® Healthy Growth for Puppies dry dog food. With so much love and the best diet, Potter grew into a handsome young dog, with a sleek and shining coat, perky black-tipped ears and the most expressive, sparkling eyes. No longer a puppy, he still gets the best diet with the Beneful® adult collection of dog food.

Chuckling as I picked up a bag of Beneful® Playful Life dry food, I thought how appropriate that it is Potter’s favorite, because he is the happiest and most playful dog I have ever met. I always enjoy the family visits, and to see the way Potter adores my son and daughter-in-law just warms my heart. I even take pictures of him to post on Twitter. He is so much fun to play with. One of his favorite games is having us take turns rolling his squeaky orange ball across the floor for him to catch and carry back, to be rolled again. I am so glad that he has been given the finest diet from the start, to help ensure he will be around for a long time to come.

Adding some Beneful® Prepared Meals™ to my grocery cart, reminded me that Potter has the very best doggy manners. He almost never begs during our family dinners, probably because he enjoys his own meals so much. Potter loves the variety of Beneful® wet foods, and I appreciate that his favorite Prepared Meals™ come in resealable containers.

Tasty treats are always on hand at my house when family gathers, and that includes the assortment of Beneful® Baked Delights® Hugs™ dog snacks for Potter in my cart.

Thanks to the Beneful® line of dog foods and snacks, I headed to the check-out, confident that I would be serving healthy and tasty fare to all my visitors.

How Bad Do You Want It?

In a new study conducted by Ben Shaoul with The New York Post they beg the question. Are you leading a life that you are unhappy with? Have you settled with where your life has taken you? The choices that you make in your life are directly correlated with your current living situation. Stop blaming other people for your mistakes! You need to be an adult and take a good look at yourself in the mirror. No more excuses and no more self pity. Sitting around and crying about your life is nothing short of pathetic. No matter how bad your life is, there is still a way out. You might come up with several reasons of why you are where you are.

Why don’t you just stop complaining, and take a step in the right direction? You might have a tough life and a difficult job, but other people have had it worse. No matter how bad you have it, just remember, that someone else has it worse. There are people in hospital beds that are begging God for a chance to live. Ask yourself this question. Is my situation worse than someone’s that is dying?

Sometimes in life we need to find our inner strength. The year is 2015, and most people in America have it pretty good. There are people that work two jobs, go to school, and have a family. Is your situation comparable? The key to success is courage and stubbornness. A stubbornness to never stop, no matter how treacherous the path. If you follow a path and never give up, I promise you that you will be further than where you began. Take that first step in the journey of your life.

Dealing With Back Pain Permanently

I’ve suffered on and off from back pain for the last few decades.  Something that has plagued my will to be active, in the worst possible ways.  But luckily I heard about North American Spine on Twitter.  Now being completely honest, I was still a little skeptical, until I read more about this company.  After I checked them out through several sources, like Wikipedia, I was clear that they’re a pretty trusted resource.

Just check out some of the real reviews from people that have visited the clinic.

Many people today suffer from back and neck pain. There are all kinds of reasons for the pain and sometimes can be very frustrating trying to pinpoint the actual location and reason for the pain. It can be caused from an injury, or degeneration. Some cases may need surgery and some may not, but just because you don’t need surgery doesn’t mean you’re not in pain. So trying to find out what to do can be a little overwhelming. North American Spine wants to help and provide patients with the information they need to make the best decision on what type of treatment that is best suited for their particular case.

North American Spine specializes in minimally invasive spinal care. They take the time to evaluate each patient’s case and find the right treatment that will help them the most. So many patients feel as though they are trapped and stuck with the pain. North American Spine offers a free MRI evaluation and a detailed pain diagnosis where they can identify the exact cause of the pain. Minimally invasive spinal procedures are so much easier on the patient than open back surgery and recover is also a lot quicker.

One particular procedure North American Spine offers is the AccuraScope procedure. This procedure begins with a small incision at the base of the spine. From there the doctor can move along the spine diagnosing and fixing problems as he goes along. This allows the doctors to take care of more than one problem with one procedure.

There are several benefits with a minimally invasive procedure. First of all there is a very small incision. There is very little scarring. There is less pain after the procedure is over and recovery time is short.

People live with back pain all the time. There are so many people that have lost work or even can no longer work. Trying to figure out the exact problem can take months and sometimes years. And some people never do find out what the problem is, and live with pain for the rest of their lives. North American Spine can give people their lives back. They are there to stop the pain, and a lot of people agree that this works.

Texting May Be Causing Serious Damage To Your Spine

When a person bends their neck forward and down, it begins putting pressure on the cervical spine. The human head, when in upright position is about twelve pounds; however when bending head to look at something like a smartphone, weight pressure increases. The increase ranges from the twelve pounds when upright to about 27 pounds at a 15 degree angle, to 40 pounds at 30 degree angle to almost 60 pounds at a 60 degree angle. This posture, over time will lead to what is being called ‘text neck’. This story was passed on to me by Vijay Eswaran.
This is a common posture when staring at a smartphone, and millions are doing it every day. Research done on the stresses in the cervical spine say this posture can lead to early wear-and-tear on the spine. This stress can lead to degeneration and could even require surgery. Researchers are calling it an epidemic due to how common it is becoming. If you look around you will see how many people have their heads down to perform some function on their smartphones, mostly texting.
To compare how much pressure the 60 degree angle causes to your spine, imagine having an eight year old child around your neck. The average person spends two to four hours per day bending their head to read email, text or to check their social media sites. When this time is added up’ it’s 700 to 1400 hours per year they are applying stress to their spines.
Some medical experts have been warning people for years that for every inch they tilt their head forward, they double the pressure on their spine. A comparison to this bend would be to bend your finger all the way back and hold it in that position for about an hour.
Not only is the concern to the spine; but it can also lead to reduced lung capacity, headaches, depression, heart disease and neurological issues.
It would be almost impossible to reverse the technology devices now being used; however we do need to change the way we look at them. People need to look at their phones with a more neutral spine.

CDC Reports that the Flu Vaccine Not as Effective This Year Due to Viral Mutations

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is reporting that mutations in the flu virus have diminished the effectiveness of the vaccine. In fact, Dr. Tom Frieden of the CDC reported the most common mutation they are seeing is the H3N2 strain of influenza. This particular strain is known to result in a higher number of hospitalizations and fatalities. As a result, the CDC expects to see more people needing to seek out medical attention and sadly more cases of flu-related deaths. As is typical of the flu, those most are risk are the young, the elderly, and those with heart problems and asthma.

In issuing their health advisory, the CDC reported that it took 85 samples of the flu virus and found that the current vaccine does not safeguard against the flue in 52% of samples taken. While the agency is capable of tweaking the vaccine to provide a better safeguard against the known strains, it isn’t something that can be achieved in a short period of time. It will take the CDC up to four months to adapt the vaccine during which time the current flu season will largely be over.

The news isn’t all bad though. Those who get the current influenza vaccine will be protected against most of the flu strains out there. In the event that someone vaccinated does come down with the flu from other strains such as the H3N2, their symptoms should be milder as a result of the vaccine. This story was shared with me via Darius Fisher.
