Ant-Man is slated as Marvel’s next big summer movie. When first announced, many shook their collective heads at the notion Marvel would invest in a character who was only marginally popular during his 1960’s heyday. The trailers are outstanding and the film is surely to be a hit. All of this is part of Marvel’s major plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Many of the actors who are signed to Marvel movie contracts may be opting out in the next year or two. While fame and fortune was achieved through their Marvel film roles, the time comes to move on. Marvel Studios cannot move on. The company has to continue producing films. This is where all the newly established characters come into play. As actors depart and take their heroes with them, new characters and actors are then able to carry the torch for the company.
If Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America bow out of future Marvel movies, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther could all step up to the plate and become the new Avengers. (Spider-Man is reportedly being eyed as becoming the new leader of The Avengers) Maybe we might even see The West Coast Avengers or The New Defenders. Marvel’s plans for Phase 3 include the continuation of established characters along with the debut of new ones. Beyond Phase 3, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is likely to look a lot different.
